Trade catalog and photocards, [ca.1900].

Consists of a catalog describing novelty knives and five photocards showing designs of knife handles. The catalog includes an overview of the manufacturing process, a copy of the warranty, types of knives available (Physician's knives, cattle knife, office knife, peerless, buttercup, dainty styles, mountaineer, carpenter's knife, brewer's knife, sportsman's knives, purse knife, etc.) and their prices, a partial list of available designs, a piece on the care of knives, and instructions for ordering. The photocards feature such things as artwork, statutes, famous people, and flags and other symbols. One of the cards depicting paintings and statutes of nudes has a disclaimer on the reverse side informing agents that "The designs on this card are copies from famous paintings and statuary, and are recognized as art. Obscene, vulgar, or pictures suggestive of vulgarity will not be copied or used on any of our knives."

The Novelty Cutlery Co. had its headquarters in Canton, Oh., but had agents all over the United States. The firm specialized in made to order knives with custom designed transparent handles. Beneath the handle on one side were affixed a name, address, or other letters; designs or photographs were placed on the reverse side.
